The current study identifies gaming-related friendships as an important social benefit and investigates the extent to which these friendships may be more beneficial than other types of in-game connections for a group of individuals who are particularly socially inhibited, quantified here by emotional sensitivity (ES). This is one of the first studies to document significant relationships between ES and the quality of online gaming-related friendships, and it suggests that these spaces offer tangible social benefits for shy individuals.

Using the omnibus telephone survey method, participants who reported playing social video games and who had either made online friends or transferred offline friends into the game environment were included in the analysis (N=1045). To examine the relationship between ES and the quality of gaming-related friendships, this research employed a multivariable model. Play frequency was not a statistically significant individual predictor of friendships, and as such, it was removed from the final model.

By exploring the role of gaming as a social connector, marketers can better reach and understand an audience that is connecting over screens, sharing their passions and building community. And with a powerful and diverse demographic that has proven itself able to transcend societal barriers, gaming could become the new standard of connectedness—the social equivalent to IQ and EQ.
